Introduction to Windows 95

Start Up

When you first switch on your PC [Personal Computer], you will be presented with the Network Login screen. When this screen appears, it will display the user name of the last person who used the machine. Either leave the username the way it is if correct or delete this user name.
You must now enter your username and password to login to the network.

You will not be allowed access to the PC unless you login to the network.

Windows Desktop

After logging in, your computer will automatically go into the Windows Desktop.

Taskbar

At the bottom of the screen is the Taskbar. This will always be visible no matter what application you are in. On the right hand side the time is displayed. On the left hand side is the Start button (detailed below). In between will be displayed all applications that are currently open. Each time you open an application (such as Excel) a button is added to the taskbar. If you click on the button, the application will be displayed. This is a convenient way of switching between applications, the same as using Alt+Tab.

Start Button

If you click on the Start button, a menu will pop up. Some of the items on the menu have an arrow at the right hand side of them. This indicates that they contain a sub-menu. If you move the mouse pointer on to the item, the sub-menu will automatically appear. The Programs menu contains a sub-menu called Accessories. This contains useful accessories such as a calculator. At the bottom of the menu is an item called Shut down.

Switching off the PC

Click on the Start button, from the pop-up menu, click on Shut Down. From the list of options, click on Shut down the computer, and then click on the Yes button.

Please note – You must NOT switch off the PC while windows is running.

Logging on as a different user

If you wish to logout and logon as a different user, click on the Start button, from the pop-up menu, click on Shut Down. You will see the same screen as for shutting down (above). Click on Close all programs and log on as a different user, and then click on Yes. You will now return to the Network Login screen.
